Meet Namita Arunkumar: Champion of Tufts Library

Namita Arunkumar, who grew up in Braintree and currently resides in Boston, is a fervent advocate for Weymouth's Tufts Library. In a recent interview with our team here at Weymouth Libraries Foundation (WLF), Namita kindly shared her insights on the profound impact the library has had on her personal and professional growth.

Join us as we delve into her experiences and perspectives on the invaluable role of our local libraries in fostering community engagement and learning:

WLF: How has access to Tufts Library’s resources and programs contributed to your personal and professional development?

Namita: Since childhood, Tufts has been a cornerstone of my educational journey. From learning to read as a child and burning energy at the old wooden playground, to later utilizing its extensive resources throughout school, I’ve always relied on Tufts as a quiet, familiar place I can rely on to focus. Whether it's school-related activities or leisurely exploring new books and interests, the library has played a pivotal role in my academic and personal growth.

WLF: Can you share a specific instance or experience where utilizing the library's resources helped you achieve a significant goal?

Namita: Absolutely! I was preparing for the most important exam of my life to date—the boards for medical school—and formed a study group of close friends that I invited to join me at Tufts. We met regularly in the private conference rooms and in the larger public spaces as well. I’m so grateful to have had a dedicated, free space where we could gather and get our work done. I’ll be graduating from Boston University  School of Medicine this spring, and will be specializing in OBGYN.

WLF: That’s incredible, Congrats! What do you like to read for fun?

Namita: I enjoy a diverse range of genres, and recent reads include  "Lessons in Chemistry," “Legends and Lattes,“ and “Hyperbole and a Half”..  I’ll also mention that the library's e-books have been a game-changer for me, especially during my transition to Boston, as I still have my library card. I haven’t paid for a book in years.

WLF: As a local resident, how do you believe Weymouth’s libraries are fostering a culture of learning and community engagement?

Namita: Weymouth's libraries, particularly Tufts, serve as vibrant hubs for community engagement and learning. Events tailored to various age groups, especially teens and kids, provide avenues for residents to come together, fostering a culture of curiosity and connection within the Weymouth community.

Namita Arunkumar's testimony underscores the profound impact of libraries like Tufts in nurturing personal growth, fostering community engagement, and facilitating access to resources vital for academic and professional development. Her advocacy highlights the pivotal role of libraries in shaping inclusive and interconnected communities.
